I think about our journey as an organization almost daily and when I do, I am always brought to the reality that we have come so far because of the efforts of our volunteers. I myself was a full time volunteer staff member for 3 ½ years. This is what happens when your heart is invested, when you so deeply believe in what you are doing.
Over the years we have had such incredible people join our volunteer team and I can truthfully say we couldn’t have done it without them.
One of these incredible individuals has been our administrative assistant intern since the beginning of this year. When I say she is a Godsend, I am not exaggerating. I met Jackie when she was interviewing me for a school project. After the interview, she asked me if there were any volunteer opportunities. I quickly said (innately knowing she was awesome), “Why don’t you fill out our intern application?”
Jackie came willing to do anything--knowing that working/volunteering for organizations like ours is not glamorous and that she would not be working with victims and survivors of sex trafficking. I still remember her first internship interview like it was yesterday. I kept thinking, “I can’t believe it. She is perfectly fit for our team.” I was right!
"It Is volunteers like this that have pushed us forward at a faster rate. This will, and has, saved lives from being exploited."
Jackie does everything from editing documents, managing social media, collaborating on new presenting techniques for our prevention program, feeding us massive amounts of papaya (welcomed with open arms), creating and managing our blog (wahoo!), to printing handouts and materials you receive at our trainings. Also, if you have ever attended one of our multiple day trainings, that yummy food was made by our in-house chef, Jackie.
I cannot say enough to describe what a joy it has been to have her in our office every day and how she has allowed us to grow, even in the few months she has been here.
It is volunteers like this that have pushed us forward at a faster rate. This will, and has, saved lives from being exploited. Sending a big thank you to Jackie and all our other incredible volunteers!
