When Love True was founded an understanding grew among the staff, that the prevention of sex trafficking was just as important as helping the victims be restored to who they were intended to be. If those who are vulnerable were able to for the most part prevent being trafficked the number of affected would be less. Our goal is to impact those numbers in a positive way.
We built our Prevention Program with the hope of ending the problem. Through the program we combat sex trafficking through raising awareness of the realities of sex trafficking by educating youth, professionals, and community members about the issue and what they can do to stop it. We host prevention programs for at-risk youth, empowering them with the knowledge of how to avoid the snares of traffickers. We also conduct educational workshops at youth facilities, on college campuses, in churches, and anywhere else events are requested. The program equips the community to rise up against sex slavery and become a voice for the voiceless.
Seeing the need for not just prevention and awareness training focused on girls, Love True developed a prevention education curriculum for young boy’s. This curriculum is a 6 week program that works with young men in educating them about sex trafficking, preventing exploitation, reducing their risk of being trafficked and or trafficking others. Our most recent intern Alec, has dedicated the last year of his masters program internship to working with Love True’s Prevention Education program. We captured some of his thoughts on the program and his experience working in this field.
“While I’ve interned in the Prevention Education Program over the last year, it has been incredible what I have been able to see and be a part of. A unique piece to this program at Love True is its adaptability, with different trainings tailored for the general public, youth, professionals working with at-risk populations, and parents and trusted adults. Because of this versatility, we have been able to train a variety of different settings, and have even been able to get our trainings into a couple schools. I’ve been around to see over 1,000 youth, professionals, and community members trained in human trafficking education during my time in this program, which has led several people who went through these trainings to report cases of sex trafficking that might not have been noticed beforehand.” - Alec
One of our more recent trainings is a Sex Trafficking Training for those working in a professional setting. In 2016 we trained 181 professionals across the state of New Jersey in this program and have heard first hand about the cases of trafficking they are reporting, and the survivors they are now helping receive resources as a result of this information. The work that is being done through this program is essential, and the responses are encouraging. We asked Carolyn Glodek, the Director of a local pregnancy center, to share her recent experience receiving training from Love True.
“Dear Love True, although this is a heavy topic, everyone who attended was enthusiastic and grateful for the information. Many considered it an eye-opener for something we don't consider too often. Some of us had already heard a presentation by Theresa Flores regarding her trafficking experience and some of us have read her book The Slave Across the Street, a very sobering piece of information. Our big take-away is that parents should always reassure their children that there is NO topic that cannot be discussed and to never hesitate to talk about any problem they experience. It was three hours that seemed to go by very quickly and also resulted in some changes to our intake procedures at our pregnancy center. We are grateful that there exists an organization like yours to address a very insidious practice.” - Carolyn Glodek
Our Prevention Program is growing. It’s impacting more and more people, and the results are promising. In 2017 we plan to continue to grow our Prevention Education allowing us to double or even triple our numbers from last year as well as develop our current trainings to be even more effective.
As I have said, this program is a vital part of Love True. It is changing how people look and interact with the world around them, encouraging awareness. We love sharing this life changing knowledge.
